Domestic Violence "A Crime"

Neela (Changed name) was born in Kavre district. She was married to Karna on her childhood and had to take over the domestic responsibilities. Karna was 12 when they were class six and got married. Neela felt happy when her husband went to school. She used to encourage him to studyand never bothered him about any proble. Instead, she handled the herself. A girl child was born to them in due course. Karna went to Kathmandu for his higher studies, Neela stayed back to look after her house. Karna got a job in government office after the completion of his studies. Neela expected to spend remaining her life with her husband. On the other hand, Karna completely forgot his wife who had supported him through his thick and thin ahd married another educated girl in Kathmandu. He used to visit his village onlyonce a year during Dashain festival. When Neela came to know about her husband's marriage in Kathmandu, she was shocked and bewildered. Neela became seriously ill because of her hard life.
On one such occasion when Karna had come to the billage, she requested him to take her along to Kathmandu; which he refused. He even ignored her request to take her to Kathmandu for treatment. When Neela became unable to work, even other family members started neglecting her. They would not even feed her properly after that.
If an educated person like Karna could be insensitive towards his wife, we can just imagine the dondit5ion of other woen in village. According to a survey done by a non-government organization called "Saathi" domestic violence took an alarming 77 percent ratio in girl abuse. In a male dominated society like Nepal, womdn are not allowed to protest against anything a man does. Society does not sympathize with women who try to protest and abuse them in return. Woman is held responsoble for her husband's cruelty or polygam. The scenario is slightlychanging in the urban areas but the picture in rural areas is still very gruesome.
